tuesday july 18 poetry markets and contestsA day late, but I hope not a dollar short. The short but nasty heat wave here in the Northeast ended with some spectacular thunderstorms that played havoc with my internet connection. It”s back and happy this morning, so here goes – three markets for your poetry that are currently accepting work. Hopefully, their quality will make up for their fashionable lateness.

Barrow Street Journal has been publishing quality poetry since 1998. In additon to the journal, Barrow Street Press also sponsors an annual contest (which just ended for the 2006 poetry prize) and publishes several books of poetry per year. The Journal accepts submissions year round. Turnaround time is 2-3 months and payment is in copies. You may submit 3-5 poems, or up to seven pages of poetry at once. More details are available on the Barrow Street Journal Submissions Page.

The Backwaters Press
updated their submission guidelines as of December 2004 to permit open submissions year round of manuscripts of poetry. They”ll read book length poetry manuscripts of 50-80 pages that meet their formatting guidelines. There is a $25 reading fee for all manuscripts submitted. Details on submission are on the Backwaters Press submissions page.

The Waywiser Press, a small independent company, with its main office in London, and a subsidiary in Baltimore, was founded in late 2001, and started publishing in 2002.

The press specializes in the publication of modern poetry in English, and is keen to promote the work of new as well as established authors. However, from time to time we also issue books belonging to other literary genres – fiction, memoir, criticism, history. The press reads submissions from April to September of each year, and only accept book-length works of poetry (50-80 pages). See the Waywiser Press submissions page for further guidelines.
